Hot forging with consideration of thermal conductivity of die material on servo press

Effects of thermal conductivity of die material on forging characteristics in hot forging process were examined using tungsten carbide (WC-20mass%Co, approximately 70 W/(m·K)) and stellite (Co-28mass%Cr, approximately 15 W/(m·K)) dies. Die quenching of a chrome steel was carried out on a servo press by controlling ram motion of the press. Rapid cooling of hot-forged specimen (approximately 300 K/s) was realized by contacting to tungsten carbide die just after hot forging. On the other hand, stellite die reduced forging load by approximately 25% because the die with low thermal conductivity was effective to keep the specimen to be high temperature during hot forging. Furthermore, stellite die was effective to fill the specimen into a small cavity of the die.
