Microstructure and mechanical properties of thixoforged A356 aluminum alloy wheels

The semisolid A356 aluminum alloy round billets were prepared by low temperature pouring and thixoforged into wheels in 200T oil press. The microstructures and mechanical properties of thixoforged wheels were studied. The results show that the A356 aluminum alloy round billets with fine equiaxed and spherical grains can be obtained by low temperature pouring at 635~655°C, and its optimum reheating process is isothermal reheating at 600 °C for 60min. The microstructure of thixoforged wheels consists of spherical a-Al grains and α+Si eutectic. The yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation of thixoforged wheeis with T6 heat treatment are 211.9 MPa, 318.1 MPa and 5.9%, respectively. It is suggested that the thixoforged A356 aluminum alloy wheels have a higher comprehensive mechanical properties.
