Evaluation of friction condition in hot forging using T-shape upsetting-extrusion test

Ring compression test (RCT) and double cup extrusion test (DCET) are widely used to evaluate the friction conditions, since they can accurately determine the friction factor in forging process whose deformation mode is similar to testing process. The rib-web parts widely used in aerospace industry are generally manufactured by closed die forging with deformation characteristic of compression and extrusion. However, the RCT and DCET can not fully reflect such deformation characteristic. In this paper, a new friction testing method, T-shape upsetting-extrusion combining compression and extrusion, is proposed. It is found that the height of rib and the width of web are both sensitive to friction condition. Therefore, the ratio of rib height to web width was chosen to be a criterion of friction. With the use of commercial FEM program, DEFORM, the influence of blank size, corner radius, rib width and friction on different interfaces were investigated.
