Research on deformation and microstructure during tube vertical extrusion process

In this paper, a finite element simulation of ultrathick seamless tube vertical extrusion was performed by using Deform software. Some experiments of the forming process with different extrusion ratio were completed, and the forming force in different processes was measured and the microstructure of the material has been studied. According to the numerical simulation results, the material flow traits, stress distribution, and the evolvement of the extrusion force have been analyzed, which is consistent with those of the experiments. That the forming force increases with the increase of the extrusion ratio was tested by the simulation and experiments, while the materials microstructure can be improved with the heavy deformation. As a result, the machine with high capacity should be selected. In this paper, the extrusion process with the deformation ratio bigger than 9 can not complete by using 12000 kN press machine. So, both the deformation parameters and the machines ability should be considered during technique optimization design in practice.
