A new look at layered double hydroxides in fire retardancy

Over the past several years, this research group has examined a variety of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene, poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene. For each polymer, a certain combination of metals seems to give the best dispersion and hence the best fire retardancy. Enough data on the various LDHs and polymers has now been accumulated so it is time to carefully study this data and determine what are the most important facets of an LDH to disperse in a particular polymer.
