Influence of fullerene on the flammability of differentpolymers studied by microscale combustion calorimetry

Fullerene (C60)) is known as a radical sponge due to its high reactivity towards free radicals. Because most of polymers experience a free radical chain scission process during combustion, the presence of C60 may reduce the flammability of polymers. In fact, C60 was found to improve the flame retardancy of polypropylene by forming a gelled-ball network. To get more information about the flame retardant mechanism of C60, the free radical reaction of C60 with various polymers has been studied in this paper. High density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC) were melt blended with 1.0 and 2.0 wt% of C60, and the effects on flammability properties were investigated by microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC). MCC is evaluated as a screening test to efficacy of flame retardant in polymers.
