Coatings for providing low flammability to polymeric materials: an overview
The use of coating, or in a more general way surface treatment, is one of the easiest and one of the most efficient ways to protect materials against fire1. It has several advantages: it does not modify the intrinsic properties of the materials such as for example the mechanical properties, it is easily processed and it can be used onto diverse materials such as metallic materials2, polymers3 and textile45. Moreover, while inflammation occurs usually on the surface of a material it is important tc concentrate the protective action at this place. It is the goal of this paper to review recent approaches based on the open literature and on-our own research to make flame retarded (FR) polymers using coatings applied at their surface.
