Flame retardancy of bio-based polymers
Bio-based plastics have experienced fast growth in the past decade thanks to the public concerns over the environment, climate change and the depletion of fossil fuels. However, important challenges are still remaining to extend the potential market of the majority of these plastics. Particularly, their physical or performance characteristics must compete with conventional plastics and have generally to be improved 1. Among them, fire retardant properties are required in many industrial applications and like most of petroleum-based polymers, bio-based plastics are highly flammable. The aim of this work is thus to describe innovative formulations and processes to prepare flame retardant bio-based materials.
