Halogen free flame retardants for thermoplastics
Thermoplastic materials are widely used with a broad range of applications. Apart from automotive applications there is a large use in electrical and electronics industry as well as in building and construction. For these applications flame retardancy becomes very important criteria. Most high volume thermoplastics themselves are easily ignited when in contact with fire sources. The decomposition products are combustible, and contribute to the further spread of the fire. Among the commercially used FR additives, bromine-containing types have the largest market share due to their high efficiency and low price. However, since the 90th, some brominated FR additives are under pressure by legislation and NGOs, which led to demand of halogen-free FR additives.
