Globally Harmonized Approaches to Pesticide Regulation

In 1991 national pesticide authorities began discussing collaboration and cooperation with regard to the review and evaluation of pesticide active ingredients. Countries acknowledged reviewing the same active ingredients and confronting similar issues. Cooperation began on a regional basis such as among the countries of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Canada, Mexico, and the United States). OECD countries through the Working Group on Pesticides (WGP) worked on the building blocks essential to global cooperation and collaboration including common data requirements, formats of dossiers and data reviews, and other evaluation tools. Both the OECD (WGP) and the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR) have provided the fora for national pesticide authorities to meet and work on common issues with the goal of reaching harmonized approaches to pesticide regulation.
