Why Are There No New Commercial Herbicide Modes of Action?
The hundreds of commercial herbicide active ingredients possess only about twenty modes of action (MOA). No new herbicide MOA has been introduced to the marketplace since the hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitors about twenty years ago. Before the early 1990s, a new MOA was introduced about every three years Part of the reason for the MOA pipeline drying up has been the dramatic reduction in the number of companies doing pesticide discovery research since 1970. Another important factor is the reduction in value of the nonglyphosate herbicide market due to the dominance of glyphosate world-wide since the adoption of glyphosate-resistant crops. This led to a reduction in investment in herbicide discovery research and in development of already discovered herbicides with old MOAs.
