Pyrethroids in California Surface Water:Occurrence, Effects and Causes
Pyrethroids are synthetic derivatives of pyrethnns and are among the most widely used insecticides worldwide. Pyrethroids are known for their high potency on invertebrate insects and are used at very low rates, which, when coupled with their low mammalian toxicity, have contributed to their popularity as wide-spectrum insecticides. Due to restrictions on the use of organophosphate and carbamate products, the use of pyrethroid insecticides has increased over the last decade in some regions, such as California. Pyrethroids are also known for their strong hydrophobicity, and hence their immobility in soil.
