Evaluation of Influences of Paddy-field Herbicides on the Aquatic Ecosystem Using Mesocosm

In Japan, when pesticide companies register new pesticides, it is necessary to submit results of toxicity tests on alga, water flea, and fish species at laboratory scale to examine the possible influences on aquatic wild animal and plant. Although these results can show some qualitative influences on the ecosystem, quantitative influences such as degree of inhibition or recovery period from the adverse effects, are difficult to be extrapolated.
