γ-Aminobutyric Acid Receptors: Multiple Potential Sites for Insecticidal Actions
The γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor, a member of the Cys-loop ligand-gated ion channel family, mediates inhibitory synaptic neurotransmission in the nervous system. The binding of GABA to the receptor enhances chloride ion permeability through its intrinsic channel, thereby suppressing neuronal excitation. While the insect GABA receptor is a validated target of widely used insecticides, it still remains an important target for further development of insecticides, given the presence of multiple binding sites for a variety of compounds.
