Action Mechanism of Isoxazoline-type Herbicides
Two isoxazoline-type herbicides, pyroxasulfone and fenoxasulfone have been developed by Kumiai Chemical Industry Co. , Ltd. , K-I Chemical Research Institute Co. , Ltd. and Ihara Chemical Industry Co. , Ltd. The former is a novel pre-emergence herbicide for use in wheat, corn, soybean and other crops and the latter is a novel herbicide for paddy fields. These herbicides provide high efficacy on both grass and broadleaf weeds. In this study, we clarified the action mechanism of two isoxazoline-type herbicides as K3 herbicide by examining the inhibitory effects of these chemical compounds on the biosynthesis of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) and VLCFA elongase (VLCFAE) activities of plants. In rice cultured cells treated with pyroxasulfone and barnyard millet cultured cells treated with fenoxasulfone, reduction of VLCFAs and accumulation of VLCFA precursors were observed. Pyroxasulfone and fenoxasulfone potently inhibited VLCFAE activities in Italian ryegrass and barnyard millet, respectively.
