Prediction and Analysis of Distortion Inlet on Compressor Performance and Stability Using Three Dimensional Model

A three-dimensional viscous model was developed to predict the effect of distortion inlet on the performance and stability of axial compressor. The model solves the N-S (Navier-Stokes) equation with source terms through the entire annulus and all blade rows. The effect of the blade, including the force and work added to the flow, is modeled by the source terms. The source terms are got by calculating the flow field parameters from the results which are generated by conventional three-dimensional CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) solver at different operation conditions, and the source terms are interpolated by local corrected mass flow at blade row inlet to get the current source terms at operating point. A transonic single-stage compressor was investigated by the model with clean inlet and distortion inlet. The three-dimensional flow field, performance and stall margin calculated by the model with clean inlet agree well with that of the experiment. The influence of circumferential total pressure distortion on the compressor performance and stability was studied using the model.
