Multibody Dynamics Modeling of Particle Behaviors in Shot Peening Process

In this paper, we carried out the numerical simulation of shot peening process by Multibody dynamics.Special contribution of this paper is the detail modeling about the interaction between shot particles and compressive air.Shot peening process has been widely used as one of the most common surface modification processes for mechanical and structural elements. In the shot peening process, a large number of hard shot particles are projected at high velocity by compressive air, and impinge on the surface of target materials. At that time, compressive residual stress and strain hardening are induced near the surface of target materials. These effects improve the fatigue strength of materials. In this research, we developed the prediction scheme for the surface treatment in shot peening process.Especially, in this paper, we focus on the shot particles interactions between particles and target materials and among particles. We also focus on the particle acceleration by the compressive air.The interactive force on the shot particles was calculated from the detail analysis of the air flow. From these analyses, results showed that the impingement locations of shot particles distributed broadly due to the collision among shot particles flying from the nozzle to the specimen. They are much closer to actual phenomenon than the previous studies.
