Modeling of Wheel/Rail Contact in Single-Blade Tramway Turnout for Analysis of Multibody Railroad Vehicles

In the single-blade turnout on tramways, the wheel comes into contact with the groove of the rail at the top of flange in order to achieve smooth transfer of contact from the stock to lead rails, which is not common in conventional railroad systems. In the numerical procedure developed in this investigation, special contact scenarios that include the multiple contact on the tread, back of flange and top of flange of the wheel can be considered.Furthermore, significant jumps in contact points on the tramway turnout can be detected using the combined nodal and nonconformal contact search. In particular, a numerical procedure for modeling interaction between the wheel and the movable tongue rail is developed in this investigation by extending the multiple look-up contact table approach. It is demonstrated by several numerical examples that various special wheel/rail contact on the single-blade tramway turnout can be predicted using the numerical procedure developed in this investigation.
