Arc behavior and metal transfer of GMAW in hyperbaric atmosphere

Hyperbaric gas metal arc welding (GMAW) has been studied for installing and repairing underwater oil and gas pipelines. The arc behavior and metal transfer of GMAW progress became one of the most important factors to enhance the welding quality. Simulations and experiments were executed in this paper to find the characteristics of the compressed arc and the special arc voltage requires affected by the increasing environmental pressure. Temperature field of arc was also simulated to research the influence of shielding gases and ambient pressures. The laws of arc voltage in GMAW process under hyperbaric air condition were given to meet the needs of selecting appropriate power supply. The metal transfer of hyperbaric GMAW was also studied. With the ambient pressure increasing gradually, metal transfer became some difficult to transfer from the wire tip to the molten pool, the spatters increased accordingly. At the same time, the critical current range of metal transfer changing from drop transfer mode to spray transfer mode in hyperbaric environment is higher than that in normal atmosphere pressure. All these results are meaningful for searching good ways to enhance the process stability and welding quality in hyperbaric GMAW procedure.
