COLD METAL TRANSFER JOINING ALUMINUM 6061-T6-TO-GALVANIZED MILD STEEL

Automotive manufactures are faced with increasing pressure to reduce the vehicle weight, improve the fuel economy, reduce the emissions, and enhance the vehicle safety and performance. Therefore, more and more vehicle structures are built using the dissimilar materials such as steel, aluminum and magnesium. Although the advantages are potentially huge, this hybrid fabrication approach raises substantial technical challenges to the design, fabricate and joining of the vehicle structures. Differences in chemical and physical properties and the insolubility of aluminum in steel lead to the formation of very brittle intermetallic phases (IMP). These intermetallic phases could potentially deteriorate the mechanical strengths of the resulting joint if they are not properly controlled.
