The melt pool character in high power fiber laser welding

Fiber laser has been receiving attention due to its advantages of high-power and high-beam quality to produce narrow and deep penetration welds at high-welding speeds. In this research, fiber laser welding was used to weld 10mm stainless steel plate with 10 KW and 4-20m/min welding speed. We found that the molten pool was long and narrow. The mathematical mode explained formation of the long-narrow pool in high power fiber laser welding was build. A mathematical model was developed to describe moving laser welding by using the Rotary-Gauss body heat source model and taking the effect of recoil pressure into account. Numerical simulation was conducted by PHOENICS software. The results showed that at high welding velocity the plasma accelerated the velocity of liquid metal around the keyhole, and it was the main reason for the formation of the long-narrow molten pool in high power laser welding.
