Application of double-ellipsoid heat source parameters adjustment on the prediction of pool size of in-service welding

Double ellipsoid heat source model is usually used in numerical simulation of in-service welding, the reasonable choice of model parameters is decisive to result accuracy. In the past, heat source parameters are often determined by experiential pilot calculations repeatedly which possess great uncertainty and workload. Therefore, in this article, analytical method is utilized to calculate double ellipsoid heat source model parameters in carbon dioxide gas shielded arc which is commonly used in in-service welding. The test and verification conducted by combining analog calculation and experiment can establish the empirical formula of the dimension parameters of the model weld pool. The research shows that, by using this method, the process in determining the heat source parameters is simplified dramatically, the efficiency and accuracy of numerical simulation are improved and the dimension of weld pool in in-service welding can be predicted very well.
