Determination of residual stresses in welded joints and structural elements using electron speckle interferometry method (ESPI-HD method)
Electron speckle-interferometry can be used in combination with hole drilling for an accurate determination of residual stresses (ESPI-HD method). With this method the deformations are measured (in several directions) caused by unloading of residual stresses in the bulk material due to drilling of blind holes. Technology and compact equipment for efficient measurement of residual stresses based on ESPI-HD method have been described. The computation method for calculation the values of stress tensor components based on surface displacements data has been suggested. A special new approach to the conventional method of speckle-interferometry in order to investigate stress gradients over the surface of the test object has been added. The developed equipment has been applied for determination of residual stresses in different structures: in welded disc of rotor of gas-turbine engine, welded pipes, shells of aluminium alloy and others.
