A framework to develop rules for the design of radically new welding technologies

Welding is perhaps the most complex of all processes used in materials manufacturing. The root of this complexity lies with the many coupled physical phenomena operating simultaneously during welding. Even if a perfect simulation was possible, the design of radically new processes requires engineering insight and creativity, both of which are based on the mastery of general rules and design principles. This presentation proposes that the desired insight and design principles can be obtained in the form of relatively simple expressions based on the dominant factors and correction factors, all of them rigorously related to experiments or state-of-the-art simulations.
