Development of high efficient hot wire laser welding and itsapplication for a wide clearance lap joint and a narrow gap joint
The purpose of this study was to introduce hot wire laser welding process, which was newly developed by us, for a wide clearance lap joint and a narrow gap joint. A wide clearance lap joint of thin plates (thickness: about 1mmt) was required in automobile industries. The fiber laser with hot wire system was used for welding of the lap joint of HT980 steel with a clearance of about 1mm using 590MPa strength level filler wire. The sound weld joints were produced. The tensile shear strengths of weld joints were varied from 500 to 600MPa. The fiber laser welding with hot wire system for a narrow gap joint (groove width: 2.5 mm) was performed for 980MPa strength class steel (thickness: 5mm) using filler wires in the strengths of 490, 590, 780 and 980MPa in order to obtain a sound weld joint which has appropriate strength and toughness. The strength of narrow gap joint of 980MPa steel using a 580MPa filler wire was almost equal to that of the base metal. Moreover, the absorbed energies of the weld metal of this joint at -40℃, -20℃ and 0℃ by Charpy impact test were higher than that of the base metal. It seemed that the sound weld joint which has appropriate strength and toughness could be produced using the narrow gap joint using the filler wire whose strength was lower than the that of the base metal under the hot wire laser welding process.
