Building a Highly Interactive Mobile Learning Game for Studying Marine Food Chain

Motivation is an important factor for effective learning but students often lack it and lose the concentration during classroom learning. The pressing issue is how to enhance and maintain students’ learning motivation.Much research has proven that Game-based Learning is a useful approach to inspire students’ motivations to learn effectively. However, most existing GBL models focus on how to leverage the delightful play and meaningful learning during the game-play only.An effective model to efficiently enhance the learning motivation and performance in and after class together by the game play is still insufficient. Therefore, this study proposes a Game and Classroom Learning Circulation (GCLC) model and applies the multi-touch and motion sensing factors of smart phones to develop a highly interactive mobile learning game based on it, situated learning, and learning by doing theories.Students can learn the Marine Food Chain knowledge taught in class, and actually apply it to play and explore the game using the smart phone after class and school.Afterwards, teachers can understand and explain students’ learning problems in class according to the diagnosis report generated automatically.Experiments will be conducted to show that GCLC model and its game are efficient and beneficial for students.
