A Non-Scale Growth Model of Migration and Structural Change
The paper analyzes intersectoral migration and structural change in a two-sector non-scale growth model. It is shown that the patterns of growth and migration analyzed by Mas-Colell and Razin (1973) in the standard neoclassical two-sector model show up in a modern theory of semi-endogenous growth. Due to learning by doing, the model also shows how the timing of a switch from autarky to free trade may determine comparative advantages, migration, and structural change during the transition to as well as after reaching the steady state. Consumer preferences for industrial goods and the growth rate of population are crucial in determining the direction of structural change.
