Topology Design of Snow Crystals Based on Topology Optimization Method

Snow crystals grow up in a variety of topologies and shapes depending on the surrounding environment such as temperature and humidity. However, there are many parts which are not elucidated about the anisotropy of growth rate of snow crystals surrounding a kernel. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the anisotropy of growth rate by many kinds of methods. In this study, growth of snow crystals is treated as the issue of thermal diffusion maximization and is tried to reproduce the snow crystal growth from the viewpoint of topology optimization. We have introduced a weighting function depending on the circumferential angle of crystal seed and have applied to a thermal conductivity to describe the anisotropy of growth rate of snow crystals. In addition, a design domain is divided into several sub-regions, and different weighting functions are set to these sub-regions.Furthermore, we have tried to introduce an oversaturated coefficient to multiply to the weighting function for the sake of better reproduction of real phenomena of snow crystal growth. As a result, we have reproduced successfully the natural snow crystal topologies by introducing the anisotropy of growth rate of snow crystals with weighting function.
