Optimal Layout of Fiber in Fiber-Reinforced Composites

This paper proposes a new optimization problem formulation for determining the optimum fiber layout.Nodal design variables are used in the formulations, including those for the fiber orientations at the nodal points and those for the fiber volume fractions.A 4-noded hybrid stress element is presented to analyze the 2D composite with variable fiber volume fraction and fiber orientation.Explicit expressions for the sensitivities of the total volume of the fiber material and compliance of the structure are derived.The sample problem of minimum compliance under the constraint on total volume of the fiber used is considered in this study.Numerical studies are conducted to evaluate the validity of the optimization model and effectiveness of the algorithm.It is shown that structures with reasonable fiber layout can be obtained.
