Ergonomic Design Method for Optimization of Comprehensive Muscle Load based on the Minimization of Regret

This paper proposes an ergonomic design method for determine the optimum solution for all participants by considering the degree of compromise, or regret, of each participant.Design of handrails position for the sit-to-stand movement was used as the case study of the proposed method. The height of handrails from the seating face h and the distance between the handrails d are the design variables, and the surface EMGs of anterior deltoid, triceps brachii, rectus femoris, and tibialis anterior were measured when the participants stood from the chair with the handrails.Among these, the muscle loads of triceps brachii and tibialis anterior were approximated as objective functions of the two design variables, and the comprehensive evaluation of muscle loads was formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem. The determination of design variables for all participants was formulated as a min-max problem that minimizes the maximum distance from optimum solution of each participant. The optimum solution of minimization of the regret is obtained at (h, d) = (296, 730).
