Developing College Students Multiliteracies in Multimodal Environments
The notion of literacy has shifted from the traditional sense of reading and writing only print text to a much broader sense of reading and writing multiple forms of non-print texts. Literacy can no longer be seen as simply the ability to read and write. The literacy is now complemented by the terms multiliteracies. The traditional language-centered literacy pedagogy can no longer satisfy the demand of the present multimodal society. Educators, researchers and teachers are rethinking literacy pedagogy to enable students to participate fully in our dynamic, technological, and culturally diverse societies. Developing students multiliteracies has been of priorities in college language teaching and becoming the main area of research in recent years. This paper based on the theory of multimodality has discussed the importance of developing college students multiliteracies and explored several activities we launched at Zhejiang University City College to enhance students multiliteracies and the effectiveness of these activities. Hopefully, it will give some hints to people who are engaging in developing multiliteracies.
