Measuring sound velocity in solid medium with dual trace oscilloscope

Measuring sound velocity is an important university physical experiment. It is possible to know the acoustical characteristics of measured medium by testing sound velocity. But few experiments concern time difference method that is abroad in ultrasonic wave industry application. With the sent signal wave chosen as the reference object, it can be compared directly with the receptive signal by twin-complex oscillograph to get the propagation time of ultrasonic sound through the solid medium. So the sound velocity can be calculated. The sound speed is computed with the measured transmitting time and the width of the object. This method is experimentally verified on aluminum cylinder. This measurement method is suitable for experimental teaching for undergraduates in physics. It can be used in the development and study of comprehensive and designed physics experiments. It has the advantages of low cost, newly designed and clear physical conception.
