Promoting the Chinese White Dolphin Protection and Education Program in College Students: The Case of Zhuhai
Zhuhai is located in South China which is a beautiful coastal city with around 1.5 million residents. The sea outside Zhuhai city is also one of the major habitats of Chinese white dolphin in China. In this study, a survey is conducted among the college students living in Zhuhai campus, also the residents of Zhuhai, investigating their attitudes and opinions towards their understanding to the current status of Chinese white dolphin and their living conditions. The survey results suggested that most college students never watch real Chinese white dolphin before but most of them agreed that the public should raise the concerns on the reducing population of Chinese white dolphin in the Pearl River estuary due to harms from industrial pollution and influencing from human activities. The public awareness and education of Chinese white dolphin is much lower than the well-know Chinese Giant Panda. Therefore, Chinese white dolphin conservation and education programs are quite necessary in the society. Because the closeness of their habitat, Zhuhai residents should response to the education program first. To promoting Zhuhai as an attractive tourism destination with its ocean resources, Zhuhai can transform the Chinese white dolphin protection and education program as a tourism attraction, such as organizing Chinese white dolphin watching and exhibition as travel activities when tourists visit here, the target goal is trying the raise the public awareness of rare animal species conservation and their living environment protection.
