Numerical simulation of saltwater intrusion to drinking water sources in Qiantang River
Saltwater intrusion in macrotidal estuary will do great harm to the drinking water sources. A twodimensional hydrodynamic salinity model is used to simulate the processes of hydrodynamic and saltwater intrusion in the Qiantang River estuary. The results show that the curves of salinity and tidal level process share a similar shape at low discharge, and tidal range has a great impact on salinity. However, the influence of the tidal process on salinity variation deceases with the increasing runoff. Furthermore, the increase in runoff will contribute to restraining saltwater intrusion, but when the runoff reaches a certain level, further increase will decrease the utilization rate of water resource. Consequently, a freshwater reservoir is chosen as the water source instead of Qiantang River during the over-saline time.
