Evaluation of The willingness-to-pay for the Air- Pollution-Related Mortality in Taiwan
This paper assesses the value of statistical life (VSL) and value of a statistical life year (VSLY) for the residents in Taiwan. Two economic valuation methods were used in this study. First, by benefit transfer method, the value of statistical life (VSL) is approximated US$1.75 million using the 2008 exchange rate. Second, by contingent valuation method, for 362 Taiwanese respondents, the median willingness-to-pay (WTP) to save one year of life is US$94,587 and the median VSL is approximated US$1.55 million. The values above were then compared to determine the optimal VSL and VSLY.
