Facile Synthesis of High Purity Ti2AlC powder by Pressureless Sintering
Ternary carbide Ti2AlC powder was synthesized by pressureless sintering using elemental powder mixture of Ti, Al and active carbon from 2.0Ti/1.0Al/1.0C(mo! ar ratio) and using TiC, Ti, Al and active carbon from 0.5TiC/1.5Ti/1.0Al/0.5C (molar ratio) at different temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to detect the phase composition and scanning electron microscope (SEM) patterns were observed to investigate microstructure of samples synthesized respectively. Results show that Ti2AlC powder synthesized by pressureless sintering from 2.0Ti/1.0Al/1.0C existing TiC as secondary phases at higher temperature. High purity Ti2AlC powder was synthesized by pressureless sintering from 0.5TiC/1.5Ti/1.0Al/0.5t at lower temperature. In a word, by adding 0.5mol TiC into the raw mixtures without changing overall stoichiometric number, high purity Ti2AlC can be fabricated by pressureless sintering.
