A Novel Hierarchical Architecture for Wireless Cognitive Sensor Networks in Smart Grids

Wireless sensor network (WSN) will play a vital part in the large-scale deployment of smart grid, which enables various demand response and energy management applications. To solve the issues such as heterogeneous coexistence, spectrum scarcity, tremendous data processing and security guarantees, revolutionary communication architecture is urgently demanded for smart grids. In this paper, we addresses the topology structure of Wireless Cognitive Sensor Network (WCSN) and the hardware structure of a wireless cognitive radio sepsor node, then analyze the incentives for introducing WCSN into smart grids and describe its definition in detail. Furthermore, we illustrate the basic principle of smart grids and propose the hierarchical architecture of WCSN. In conclusion, we demonstrate cognitive communications in home area networks, neighborhood area networks and wide area networks.
