Biodegradation and shock effect of phenol on the nitrification process
Effects of phenol on the nitrogen removal and phenol biodegradation pathways were studied in batch tests. Results showed that phenol was toxic to nitrification process as an inhibitory and could be biodegraded completely at concentrations ranging from 0 to 195 mg/L .The biodegradation rate were between 3.030 ~ 5.39 mg/(hMLSS) at different initial concentration of phenol. The aerobic heterotrophic nitrification bacteria, autotrophic nitrification bacteria and denitrifying bacteria contributed to the degradation of phenol. As carbon source, phenol involved in the denitrification process and the highest removal rate obtained in this study was 10.6 mgCODZ(gVSSh). Simultaneous nitrification denitrification existed in the system with the average total nitrogen removal rate of 40.8% under aerobic conditions.
