Study on Methods of Computing Automobile Hydroplaning Speed

Automobile tires could be not in contact with wet road surface at a certain speed, which will cause dangerous phenomenon of hydroplaning. In this paper, the mechanism of automobile hydroplaning was discussed. Following an analysis on the state of the art of hydroplaning, a formula for computing hydroplaning speed was derived from the characterized parameters of tire-fluid-road. The result showed that the less mean texture depth, tire pressure and the more water film depth could incur lower hydroplaning, which is helpful to make a decision of controlling driving speed on wet roads.
