Control of Water Supply on Distribution of Human Settlement in Arid Zone A Case Study in Kashgar, Sinkiang
Location of human settlement is influenced by such natural conditions as climate, terrain and water. In arid areas, water is a major factor determining the location of house, village, town and city. However, the spatial relation between water sources and location of human settlement remains unclear. Using data of water and human settlement in kashgar region, our study showed that most villages located to water supply in a distance less than half an hour, controlled by the supply of surface water and groundwater. The results also illustrated that larger settlements are less constrained by water supply, and could locate in a farther distance to water supply. This may be the role of water facilities constructed by human beings.
