Numerical Model of Non-uniform Corrosion Characteristics of Plain Steel Bars in Concrete
An experimental laboratory study was carried out to examine the non-uniform corrosion of plain steel bars in concrete specimens partially placed in 5% sodium chloride solution under conditions of accelerated corrosion. The non-uniform corrosion characteristics of the plain steel bars expressed in terms of corroded section contour, diameter loss and sectional area loss corresponding to mass loss in the range from 0.1% to 11.9% were measured for 30 specimens. Based on the test results, a numerical model for the corroded section contour was proposed, thus enabling the diameter loss and sectional area loss to be calculated. Test results are compared with numerical results to verify the numerical model, and some suggestions are given to evaluate the non-uniform characteristics of plain steel bars at different degrees of corrosion.
