On the Gains and Losses of Chinese Architectural Education from the National Building Practices
In the past few years, the designs by some Chinese architects did not win in the national architectural design competition. There are some reasons for it. This paper compares the projects carried out by some Chinese designers and those by foreigners, and reveals a few problems in Chinese architectural education, such as the designers quality training, design skills and so on.. This research advocates a shift from one-dimensional to multi-dimensional thinking and proposes using inspiration and intuition in architectural design so as to promote students creativity. The creativity training should focus on aesthetic sense, space experiential and expressive capabilities of using traditional symbols and abstract styles. In the meanwhile, the teaching programs should emphasize the combination of art with technology, real context teaching, two-tutor and evaluation system in various dimensions. We hope that these methods may improve the power of Chinese architects so that they will be more competitive in architectural designs.
