Scrutiny the Challenges in Building a Sustainable Community
Sustainable Community is a concept and goal widely accepted nowadays by most of the authorities in the background of sustainable development. However, the implementation of this concept is never a simple story. This paper took the recent extension of Milton Keynes in UK as a case study, analyzed the challenges and compromise in the planning for Sustainable Community. By a thorough literature review and interviews to different groups, the author tried to answer such a question: why a plan originally aiming at sustainabiltty was then considered as against the principle of sustainable urban form in its implementation? It found out that the principles of sustainability would encounter many challenges in a real site. The concrete plan of a sustainable community is actually a product of compromise taken account of the history, land use and traffic mode of its surrounding area. After the long negotiation process in urban planning, the original clear concept of sustainable urban form might finally diluted by the conflicts in practice.
