The effects of Introducing Gap in the Aggregate Gradation on the Properties of Porous Asphalt
This paper evaluates the effects of introducing a gap in the porous asphalt gradation on the mix volumetric properties and performance. The Dutch single layer porous asphalt gradation (PAC 0/16) and a newly developed gradation were adopted in this study. In the Dutch aggregate grading, a gap was introduced by removing aggregate sizes between 5.60mm and 2.00mm corresponding to mix type PAC 0/16. In the proposed gradation, aggregate sizes ranged from 5.0mm to 2.36 mm, while a third gradation was prepared without gap. A conventional binder 60/70 penetration grade was used for the specimen preparation. Subsequently, the engineering properties of all porous mixes were evaluated from the permeability, Cantabro, indirect tensile strength and semicircular bending tests. Overall, the results indicated that the presence of gap increased the air voids and coefficient of permeability. However, the changes in mix abrasion loss, indirect tensile strength (ITS) and fracture resistance are not statistically significant.
