Cellular Automata method for mapping failure patterns of masonry wall panels with openings
This paper proposes a cellular automata (CA) method to map the failure patterns of laterally loaded masonry wall panels with openings. The normalized displacements of all the cells extracted directly from the finite element analysis (FEA) results are used as the state values of the CA model; and then, a maximum correlation coefficient criterion for matching zone similarity is proposed in this paper to determine the similar zones between the base (tested) and new(analyzed) panels. Finally, the criterion for judging cracking zone is used to determine the failure pattern of the masonry wall panels. The case studies indicate that the predicting failure patterns agree well with the testing results. This study expands the application of the CA method into the masonry wall panels with openings.
