Empirical research on trips of residents in large communities at the surrounding area of the center city of Shanghai

Construction of large communities which have a relatively large population and occupy substantial area will be a process of suburbanization of the residential space of Shanghai. However, empirical studies have found that there tends to be such problems as imperfect infrastructure and lack of public service facilities in the surrounding large communities. Therefore, the demands of the residents in the surrounding large communities for transportation and trips have attracted the attention of the government and the planner. With the residents of Jinhe New Estate at Jiangqiao large community base, Jiading District, Shanghai as the investigation object and by comparing various age groups with regard to their trip characteristics including trip purpose, trip intensity, travel mode and travel time through questionnaires, it is concluded that the demand of the residents in this community for trips to buy articles for daily use accounts for a relatively large proportion and that the residents are substantially dependent on the public transport, which provides an investigation basis for planning and construction of other large communities in the future.
