Green Materials? Carbon Footprints Comparison of Steel and FRP Structures
The world is facing global climate change together with the energy crisis caused by limited traditional fossil energy sources. It is crucial to develop green technology that not only can solve the energy crisis, but also can provide environmental benefits. This study applied life cycle assessment and carbon footprint assessment to evaluate a Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics (GFRP) building structure which is located at the National Taipei University of Technology (NTUT). SimaPro7.2.3, a life cycle assessment software and IPCC 2007 GWP 100a were adopted to calculate carbon footprints of this case. In order to make the comparison between the GFRP and steel materials, the carbon footprint of this GFRP structure was assessed and compared with an imaginary structure using traditional building material, H-beam steel. The results showed that carbon emissions are 21,361 ~ 66,615 kgCO2eq when using recycled steel, and 61,510 ~ 86,446 kgCO2eq when using GFRP. The carbon footprints of using virgin steel are 97,760 ~ 143,014 kgCO2eq.
