The effect of salinity shock on nitrogen removal via nitrite of advanced landfill leachate using UASB-A/O process
Saline mature landfill leachate is treated using an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket(UASB) combine with an anoxic/aerobic reactor (A/O). The influence of salinity shocks from 10g/L to 35g/L on the performance of the system and characteristics of the activated sludge has been studied. Results indicate that the removal efficiency of total nitrogen(TN) and ammonium nitrogen(NH4+-N) were decreased by 13.5% and 12.1%, respectively, whereas the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand(COD) was affected slightly; the degradation of different pollutants in the system is not completely independent but a unified whole; the anaerobic particulate sludge in UASB has stronger ability of resistance for salinity shocks compared with the aerobic sludge in A/O; pH value is the better choice as the fuzzy-control parameter in A/O treating landfill leachate containing saline compared to dissolved oxygen(DO); the free ammonia(FA) concentration in A/O was increased and the nitrite accumulation rate of the effluent gets small range of ascension under the dual inhibitions of salinity and FA.
