Fractional Differential-Based Approach for Robust Image Edge Detection

This paper proposes a fractional differential-based image edge detecting algorithm. This algorithm calculates the image gradient using Riemann-Liouville fractional calculus definition instead of the derivative of Gaussian function, and the accuracy and robustness of the edge detecting algorithm is improved. A fractional order differential mask is proposed and analyzed in frequency domain, and the relation between the edge-detecting capability and parameters is shown. Three methods are introduced to evaluate the edge detecting algorithms. Finally, the validity of the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing with six typical image edge detecting algorithms.
