An Estimation about Potential Load of Agricultural Chemicals to Water Environment in Japan

In this study, we firstly established an aquatic toxicity database for 364 agricultural chemicals (active constituents) used in Japan for 49 species of six organism groups. Reference Concentrations for aquatic life protection (RfCaq) were proposed for 361 agricultural chemicals. The RfCaq values showed wide variations, sometimes even up to 108 times. The agricultural chemicals with very low RfCaq values include many pyrethroid, benzoylurea and organophosphate insecticides, and they are highly toxic to aquatic insects and crustaceans. Then, Ecotoxicity-weighted Usages of agricultural chemicals were calculated from the amounts of agricultural chemicals divided by their RfCaq. These Ecotoxicity-weighted Usages varied widely, sometimes even up to 109 times. The worst 10 agricultural chemicals were revealed as five organophosphate insecticides such as diazinon and dichlorvos, three pyrethroid insecticides, an organochlorine insecticide and an organocopper fungicide. Finally, those agricultural chemicals that should be reduced or replaced were identified. This study is useful for promoting future researches and effective management of agricultural chemicals for the protection of aquatic life.
